Stretch Mark Removal Q & A

What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks are scars that occur when your skin stretches too much. This abrupt change in the skin causes tiny ruptures in elastin and collagen. When the skin heals, stretch marks may be visible.

When stretch marks first appear, they might look pink, purple, red, dark brown, or reddish-brown and may become itchy and slightly raised. The marks often fade over time and eventually sink down slightly beneath the skin.

While these marks may not go away entirely, cosmetic treatments can help reduce their appearance.

What can cause stretch marks?

Some people are more prone to stretch marks than others. Common causes of stretch marks include:

  • Being pregnant
  • Sudden growth spurts during puberty
  • Rapid muscle mass gains
  • Sudden weight gain or weight loss
  • A family history of stretch marks
  • Fluctuating hormone levels

If someone in your family has stretch marks, you may be more prone to developing them since genetics can play a role in whether or not you get them. Regardless of what caused your stretch marks, Dr. Stoll has tools available that can help improve their appearance.

How are stretch marks treated?

While stretch marks may never go away entirely, treating them with a laser makes them much less noticeable and helps alleviate any itching. Dr. Stoll uses the Icon laser to make stretch marks fade and look more like your surrounding skin.

The Icon laser reduces the appearance of stretch marks by using fractional laser technology, which delivers pulsed energy to your skin to target discoloration. The skin reacts to laser energy by producing new collagen, which improves the color and texture of your stretch marks.

For best results, Dr. Stoll may recommend 3-5 laser treatment sessions. You may feel slight warming or cooling or feel the sensation of a rubber band snapping against your skin during the procedure. However, stretch mark laser treatment is tolerated well by most patients. Each session may take about 30 minutes, and there is little to no downtime after treatment.
